Atul has been working for years to bring dignity and justice to sex workers in India, and the way he explained the <strong>truth behind red light areas<\/strong> left me speechless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of us carry a very superficial idea of what happens inside a red-light area. Society often labels these women as \u201cbad,\u201d \u201cdirty,\u201d or \u201cimmoral.\u201d But as Atul explained, the real story is about <strong>exploitation, survival, and a system that society itself fuels.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"GB Road &amp; Red Light Area Exposed \ud83d\udd34| Reality Behind Kotha, Hotels &amp; Spa, Call Girls &amp; Sex Workers\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xr9gPxKno2A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2876e10b540e2cdcb7ef1d911c25fd94\" style=\"color:#154cc3\"><strong>Why is it Called a \u201cRed Light Area\u201d?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Atul started with a simple but eye-opening fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The term <em>red light area<\/em> dates back to colonial times. Just like a traffic signal, the <strong>red light symbolized danger, stop, and risk.<\/strong> Brothels were marked with red lamps outside, warning people about the \u201cimmoral activities\u201d inside. Over time, this became the universal name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But as Atul said: <em>\u201cThe real danger was never the women, it was the system trapping them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cab32fb9855c462318abe2539e8c12c3\" style=\"color:#154cc3\"><strong>Women in Red Light Areas: Victims, Not Villains<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the strongest points Atul made was that women here are <strong>not criminals, but victims of circumstances.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They don\u2019t go searching for men. It\u2019s men who come, pay money, and exploit them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many are <strong>forced into this trade<\/strong> through trafficking, poverty, or betrayal by someone they trusted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unlike prisoners, they never get a trial or chance for freedom, their sentence lasts a lifetime.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Atul\u2019s words were clear: <em>\u201cSociety blames them for something they never chose.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-791c853e11a21258f30df264824d86e4\" style=\"color:#154cc3\"><strong>The Forgotten Roots of the Kotha<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before red light areas became what they are today, <strong>kothas<\/strong> were cultural spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Women performed <strong>classical dance and music<\/strong>, often with live tabla and harmonium.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Patrons supported them without necessarily buying sex.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Traditions like <strong>Nathutrai (nose-ring custom)<\/strong> protected minors; girls with a nose ring were untouchable until they came of age.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Atul reminded us that entire communities, like the <strong>Nats<\/strong>, once carried forward this cultural identity. Sadly, art was replaced by exploitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-bb7b7a0db888596b2c76edd82eed6874\" style=\"color:#154cc3\"><strong>The Business Side of Exploitation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Behind the walls of a brothel lies a <strong>well-oiled exploitation network.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A girl is often <em>bought<\/em> for \u20b950,000\u2013\u20b91,00,000, then trapped in a never-ending cycle of debt.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Every day, she may see <strong>15\u201320 customers, charging \u20b9250\u2013\u20b9300 each.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Her share? Almost nothing. The money goes to the madam, pimps, local shopkeepers, and sometimes even corrupt police.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Even nearby shopkeepers profit, if they bring a customer inside, they get a small commission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Atul explained it bluntly: <em>\u201cEveryone earns, except the woman who is actually suffering.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-681a83805ce27d5d277ed301678a608b\" style=\"color:#154cc3\"><strong>Inside a Kotha: Harsh Reality vs. Bollywood Illusion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Forget the glamorous image shown in films. Atul described what a <strong>real kotha<\/strong> looks like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Narrow staircases that lead to dim, suffocating rooms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two benches where women sit on one side and men on the other, choosing like goods in a market.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Behind a curtain, a tiny, unhygienic room with a broken bed or mattress, no privacy, no dignity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The very word <em>kotha<\/em> means the <strong>darkest, innermost storage space<\/strong> in a house. Sadly, that\u2019s what these women\u2019s lives become, locked away, unseen, unheard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-36ce2e0cc9586aa62d1b09ca5c0cc1ab\" style=\"color:#154cc3\"><strong>Who Really Visits Red Light Areas?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another misconception Atul busted is about the customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not rich men or businessmen as movies often show. Instead, most are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Daily wage workers, rickshaw pullers, laborers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Men earning \u20b9500 a day, spending half of it here.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Atul pointed out the <strong>double standard<\/strong>: society blames women but never questions the men who walk in daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-16d8ab38117fa85278123464b36d4081\" style=\"color:#154cc3\"><strong>The Larger Truth: Society\u2019s Hypocrisy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At the heart of it, Atul Sharma\u2019s message was about <strong>our collective silence and hypocrisy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Red light areas exist because there is demand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The women carry all the stigma, while the men remain invisible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poverty, trafficking, and exploitation fuel the cycle, but society only points fingers at the victims.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As Atul said on the podcast: <em>\u201cIf you want to understand the red light area, don\u2019t just look at the women, look at the men who keep coming back, and the system that profits from their suffering.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a61d55c5ac421d4ca87caa905b9bb77d\" style=\"color:#154cc3\"><strong>Final Thoughts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>My conversation with Atul Sharma changed the way I look at red light areas in India. What we often see as \u201cimmorality\u201d is actually <strong>a story of survival, injustice, and human rights violations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next time you hear someone label these women, remember:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They didn\u2019t choose this life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Society and demand forced them into it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The real question isn\u2019t \u201cwhy do women sell their bodies?\u201d but \u201cwhy do men keep buying?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>This blog is based
