When we sit down to enjoy an hour of non-stop laughter on The Kapil Sharma Show, what we see is only the final product — the polished, punch-packed comedy that leaves us in splits. But what goes on behind the scenes? How much effort does it really take to make those 60 minutes of television magic?

In a candid conversation on the YT Mahendra Podcast, renowned comedian and mimicry artist Vikalp Mehta opened up about his experience being a part of The Kapil Sharma Show , a journey he describes as one of the biggest learnings of his life.

Vikalp begins by talking about the unpredictable nature of live comedy. Sometimes, no matter how experienced a performer is, there are days when your “sur” (mood or rhythm) just doesn’t click. You’re not in the right headspace, or perhaps the energy just isn’t right. And when that happens, even the best jokes may not land.

Your body language, stage presence, and especially your preparation , all of it plays a huge role. “If you’re not well-rehearsed, your mind is elsewhere, and then the comedy doesn’t flow,” he explains.

Vikalp breaks down the detailed process that goes into every single episode:

  1. Scriptwriting (3-7 Days Before the Shoot):
    • The writing team starts with a base script.
    • Once the concept is ready, actors are called in for a table read.
    • Actors (like Vikalp playing Akshay Kumar or someone else doing Ajay Devgn) add their own flavor and suggestions.
    • The script is edited collaboratively, finalized, and locked.
  2. Rehearsals:
    • Actors read and rehearse the script 10+ times.
    • Blocking is done on stage , entries, exits, positions, timing.
    • Every segment is timed and practiced, as no retakes are allowed during the performance.

“What you see on screen is exactly how we perform , just like a live stage show. No retakes, no cuts during the act,” Vikalp shares.

  1. Shoot Day:
    • A typical shoot lasts around 1.5 to 2 hours.
    • From that, about 50-60 minutes of content is aired.
    • Extra footage, audience interactions, or long-winded parts are edited out.
    • The show is shot with a live audience, and reactions are genuine.

An episode is generally divided into four segments:

  • Segment 1: Kapil interacts with Archana Puran Singh, cracking jokes and setting the tone.
  • Segment 2: Celebrity guests arrive (e.g., Ayushmann Khurrana, Nora Fatehi).
  • Segment 3 & 4: Skits by comedians like Krushna, Kiku, and others , with different characters and themes.

Between segments, there are short breaks (5-15 minutes) and sometimes a meal break of up to an hour. During this time, the audience remains seated, unless instructed otherwise.

Vikalp clears the air about audience participation:

  • There is no ticket cost for the general public.
  • However, around 20% of the audience are paid junior artists, hired to maintain energy, follow instructions, and stay throughout the long shoot hours.
  • The rest includes guests, friends of performers, or people invited by the production team.

Any ticket being “sold” online is likely a fraud, he warns.

When asked about behind-the-scenes relationships, Vikalp shares:

“My best bonding is with Kiku Sharda. He’s an incredibly warm and genuine person.”

He also addresses the viral video involving Krushna Abhishek and alleged tension on the sets. While Vikalp wasn’t sure if the clip was genuine or promotional, he believes that such seasoned professionals rarely indulge in real conflicts. “Everyone gets angry sometimes, but I don’t believe they fight like that regularly.”

For Vikalp, working on The Kapil Sharma Show wasn’t just another gig , it was a masterclass in live performance. From timing and improvisation to audience engagement and teamwork, the experience taught him lessons no acting school could.

He also accompanied Kapil Sharma on an America tour, performing for Indian audiences abroad , another transformative experience.

So, the next time you laugh at a sketch on The Kapil Sharma Show, remember , it’s not just humor, it’s hard work, hours of rehearsal, and team coordination that brings it to life. And for artists like Vikalp Mehta, being part of that process is more than just entertainment , it’s a career-defining experience.
